Totara 19.1: Leveraging AI to Deliver a Smarter, More Personalized Learning Experience

The Totara LMS platform continues to evolve with the release of version 19.1, available since July 8, 2025. With this update, Totara takes a strategic leap forward by further integrating artificial intelligence into learning journeys while directly addressing the practical needs of L&D managers, HR leaders, and IT departments.

Totara 19.1: A Version Focused on AI and Productivity

The ambition behind this new release is clear: to streamline content creation, enhance user journeys, and boost the overall performance of digital learning programs. Among the most notable new features:

A Content Assistant Powered by OpenAI

Thanks to the integration of generative AI, administrators can now create or summarize content directly within the Totara editor. Whether it's for a module summary, a learning resource, or an Engage card, the suggestions are customizable, fast, and ready to use.

AI-Generated SMART Goals

This feature is especially valuable for performance reviews or upskilling programs: based on a simple prompt, Totara automatically generates SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound), complete with pre-filled deadlines.

Micro-Quizzes to Reinforce Learning: Knowledge Check-ins

Totara 19.1 introduces the ability to create non-graded micro-quizzes from PDF documents. Integrated into playlists or collaborative spaces, they offer a lightweight way to validate knowledge informally while keeping learners engaged.

Built-in Image Generator

Creating educational visuals has never been easier : simply enter a text prompt to generate a relevant illustration automatically paired with alt text to ensure accessibility.

A More Powerful and User-Friendly Mobile App

The Totara mobile app has been enhanced to better support employees on the move: • Offline access to training content (SCORM, PDF, MP4, etc.) • Automatic sync once reconnected • Advanced filters to simplify content search • Visual tracking of module progress This update reflects Totara’s commitment to delivering a seamless learning experience across all devices.

Technical Enhancements for Greater Flexibility

Totara 19.1 isn’t just about front-end improvements key backend upgrades include: • A more comprehensive GraphQL API (covering seminars, reports, cancellations, and more). • New permission settings for more granular control of performance activities. • Additional webhooks to automate data flows.

Self-Enrollment in Programs: Empowering Learners with Greater Autonomy

A highly anticipated feature within the Totara community: self-enrollment for programs and certifications is now available. Learners can now join programs based on predefined rules reducing the administrative workload for L&D teams while boosting engagement.

Dashboards & Seminars: Enhanced Usability and Control

Dashboards are now sortable and customizable, with a new built-in report ready to use. • Seminars now support self check-in via QR code or URL, making them ideal for hybrid and in-person events.

Expanded Learning Resources via Totara Academy

Totara now offers a new training pathway within its Totara Academy, focused on creating engaging content. This module is downloadable, assignable, and contributes to certifying your organization’s content creators.
