Content designed for a large screen and an uninterrupted hour of learning is unlikely to work effectively when accessed on the go.
The confusion most often comes from the scope of each term. E-learning is the umbrella term: it encompasses all forms of training delivered remotely through digital technologies, from a one-hour learning programme to a 30-second quiz. Within this broad category, two distinct approaches coexist.
The first relates to content length. This is where microlearning comes in, with short modules built around a single learning objective. The second relates to how learners access the content, which is where mobile learning comes in: what defines it is not the content of the module itself, but the device from which learners access it.
A three-minute module accessed on a smartphone can fall into all three categories at once, and this is one of the most common use cases. Identify the target audience and context of use: assess available devices, connectivity in the workplace, languages required, the actual time available for learning and employees’ level of digital confidence. The latter should be assessed rather than assumed: according to the 2026 French Digital Barometer, four in ten people in France report facing barriers to using digital technologies, including 22% who cite a lack of digital skills.
Define the objectives and determine what works on mobile: key messages, job-specific tasks, product sales pitches and procedural refreshers are all well suited to mobile learning. Not everything should be transferred to mobile, however: complex negotiation skills, for example, are still better developed through instructor-led training.
Design for mobile screens: use a vertical format, keep content short, ensure text can be read without zooming, add subtitles to videos for sound-off viewing, and limit each screen to a single interaction.
Deliver, measure and optimise: track completion rates, quiz performance and login frequency, then refine the programme based on a pilot conducted within a region, retail network or business unit before rolling it out more widely.
Mobile learning complements group learning sessions rather than replacing them. It can be used to prepare learners ahead of a session, provide spaced reinforcement in the weeks that follow, and make learning resources available directly in the flow of work.
Instructor-led training and virtual classrooms retain what they do best: hands-on practice, developing practical skills and facilitating peer-to-peer interaction. Mobile learning does not replace the trainer; it extends the impact of training between sessions.
